The Ins And Outs Of Biometric Readers

Biometric Reader

The latest technology in the security industry involves biometrics and the use of biometric readers. Biometrics is the technology that measures and analyzes human body characteristics for identification purposes. There are three key components in biometric security systems. One is the biometric reader that gathers, or scans, the body part used for identification. The second component is the software that converts the information gathered by the reader and puts it into a digital format. Then the information is stored in a database. The technology of biometric readers has been in use in the commercial and government sector for quite some time, but is now becoming more popular in the home security industry.

Biometric readers are more widely used than most people realize. Law enforcement agencies use them on a regular basis to identify known criminals with fingerprints stored in a national database. Sometimes this technology can even extend across international lines to catch criminals that have escaped the country. Forensic scientists rely heavily on them to solve crimes in which fingerprints or palm prints might have been left at the scene of a crime. However, the banking industry also uses them as well as the pharmaceutical research industry. Various agencies within the government use biometric readers to identify and verify employees and their security levels. Theme parks are beginning to use them to verify that tickets are being used by the same people day after day and not being switched around.

Now, biometric readers are making their way into the home security industry and into the mainstream workforce.  Biometric door locks contain readers designed to recognize fingerprints. Biometric gun safes and jewelry safes are becoming more popular with homeowners, as well. In the workforce employers are using biometric time clocks to prevent time theft by employees. The use of these time clocks also helps speed up payroll and makes it more accurate. Biometrics is a rapidly evolving technology.

Biometrics technology began with hand geometry recognition, but has advanced far beyond this simple technology. This is because hand geometry scanners have limited use and unfortunately hand geometry is not highly unique to an individual. Because of this there was a need to develop more accurate uses of biometrics. The most well known biometric readers recognize palm prints, fingerprints, irises and facial characteristics. However, there is much more to biometric security that just these few. Signature recognition is used widely in the banking industry. Biometric readers are even capable of vascular pattern recognition that reads the patterns of veins in a person's retina.

There is a wide range of security options and verification systems available to homes and businesses alike. Biometric technology has proven to have many different uses making it the leading advance in the security industry both in the home and commercial sector.
